As far as I know the Matacic discography never was made available. A few weeks ago a fellow at other (more amorphous) forum – Mr. Makopolus - published his list that I find worth to be preserved and publicized. So he is it: the Matacic discogra...

Every once in a while when I sit and listen to some Internet radio station I have to jump up from the sofa (like a wounded-in-ass-antilope) and record it so I can figure out what recording it was.Just wanted to share this little excerpt. Sorry f...

There's a bunch more filmed beethoven on youtube. The Karajan performances are really well presented, the 5th is really cool. Check it out even if you despise Karajan's earlier 5ths, the cinematography and drama of the filming is great. http://www.yo...

Picked up a CD box at local Best Buy. Nine symphonies for $32. Recordings by Deutsche Grammophon, first released in 63. Karajan conducts Berlin Phylarmony.Brilliand performance and very good sound....

The ninth on that set is my favourite rendition, I like it better than the acclaimed Furtwangler's, but I suspect I should listen to many other ones.......

[This is a repost from Audio Asylum -- Music Lane]
Not to mince words, I have five. And this from a guy who usually disdains such collections. But there are exceptions.
-- Schnabel. (Of course) But he can be overly fierce.

The recording of Beethoven IX with Fürtwängler is cosidered by many as the non plus ultra among the interpretations. The recording is bold and very impressive indeed, but the interpretation is of course outdated and is one of a required taste. Fürtwä...

I had to take a look at this thread... I've played the few Beethoven symphonies that I have today. one 5 and two 7.After 1 LP side of Böhm/Berlin I couldn't stand anymore and actually thought "what a stupid symphony!".I decided to give Carlos Kleiber...

Yep, the Carlos Kleiber’s Beethoven 5 and 7 are pretty much attachable. If you for a first time came across to a “better performances” then you might imagine how different might be experiences if you catch a “better performances” live.
BTW, t...

I know zero about pressings, but the Kleiber DG has "signature series" written on it, not "Privilege". Same thing?Yes, I'd really like to catch something like that live. There will be a Beethoven Symphony #5 performed here in November. Conductor Andre...
...I nominate Mengelberg's as the finest overall. Unfortunately it does not include his utterly transcendent studio recording of the Sixth.clark
Sadly, the sound quality of older, mono recordings usually puts me off ...
I agree about the fragility but perhaps less so about "toy like". I am just now hearing for the first time Beethoven's 7th by Nanut and the second movement is very lovely, beautiful, mesmerizing and as the Eroica seemingly well und...
For me, the success of a Beethoven performance comes down to interpretation, not orchestral sound.
Not for me. I look for the “whole package” and not only in Beethoven. I do not relay collect “music” but rather “event...

I'll never forget... although it wasn't that long ago...Twenty years, maybe.Symphony Hall, the Leipzigers under Masur. And only an encore: The Egmont Overture. After it was over I turned to my buddy and said, "I think I've just heard Beethoven for the ...
A wonderful Hungarian conductor Carl Melles performed in 90s a cycle of all Beethoven symphonies leading Brunswick State Orchestra. It was not the New Jersey Brunswick band but the “Staatsorchester Braunschweig” – probably ...

Hi, Anyone listening to the new release of beethoven cycles by Anima Eterna organised by Jos van Immerseel (ZigZag productions ZZT080402.6 distributed by Harmonia Mundi)?Really passionate small group. What is nice is overall balance and quality of mu...

Philips (stereo) PHS900-120Another example of how sentimental I am, I suppose, but I just love these pieces that showcase Beethoven's utter mastery of earlier forms, which he seemingly tosses around nonchalantly, but with the utmost affection and res...

I happen to prefer the 7th piano sonata to the 11th, as music; but in this case there is enough "performance bleed through" to +/- homoginize these two not-entirely-dissimilar sonatas on this record, Angel 35653. One might get the best of this ...
I'm not that 'into' Debussy or Ravel, so I thought some Beethoven sonatas might give me a better idea of his playing to start off with.
That is kind of funny as I am not 'into' the Gieseking’s Beethoven– I...

Well, my Great Recordings of the Century EMI CD has arrived of the Opp 53, 57, 109 & 110 piano sonatas by G. It's almost reversed what I expected to hear in that, from what I have heard of his reputation, I would have expected him to ...

Beethoven: Sonatas for Piano & Cello Op. 5, Nos. 1 & 2

This is intensely moving. Both players are consistently inspired from beginning to end. This is real chamber music...

I mean who recorded ALL of them at the SAME level of performing quality? A used set that I fished recently suggest that I might found a noble contestant.
It is box set of 3 CD (DG 435 744 -2) that has all 5 concertos performed by Wilhel...

For many years my favourite performer for the Sibelius has been Christian Ferras. He has a DG recording with Karajan, and also there is a DVD-Video performance with Mehta. In both, his interpretation is very similar - if you want to experience icy ...

It is a tradition in Boston to close the Tanglewood season with Beethoven IX symphony and it is almost a tradition to pay it very badly. Today was not an exception. Michael Tilson Thomas led BSO with Tanglewood Festival Chorus with the celebrated wo...

Last night as I lay down in bed I checked what was on the local PBS FM, using my headphones. Beethoven's 7th Symphony was near the end of the first movement, and it was being played well enough that I continued listening through to the end.I was try...
