"During a rehearsal with an orchestra, Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli stopped mid-performance, visibly frustrated. The orchestra members were puzzled, as everything seemed to be going well. Finally, Michelangeli exclaimed, “The piano is out of tune!”
The piano tuner, who was in the room, hurried over to check, only to discover that the tuning was indeed impeccable. Michelangeli stared at him sternly and then clarified:
“The piano is not out of tune… the air around it is!”
This bizarrely precise remark left everyone stunned and confirmed Michelangeli’s legendary reputation for being hypersensitive to every detail—real or imagined. It’s unclear if the air ever got “fixed,” but his performance, as always, was flawless."
