Like colourful contrasts? Hinrich Alpers on piano.
I was listening to some of this past year's Honens piano 'competition' and was exposed to a german named Hinrich Alpers.
If he wants to play whatever it is he's playing you can really tell and the emotional contrasts through colours on the piano are incredible. Which would be all well and good but not really that interesting, if it weren't for his control over those colours, which really is something special. Lots of fun to listen to if you're in the mood.
The Honens website (honens.com) has some exerpts of the performances for the competition. I would suggest both the solo and trio portions.

notes about these files
I'm looking forward to finding some quality recordings played by this guy. But in the meantime it's only fair to warn that the files on the Honens site aren't very well encoded, lots of artifacts and a couple level matching issues.
The actual recordings are quite simple, so there's some directness you don't get with 'proper' technique, along with acoustic artifacts the microphones couldn't handle etc. At least that's how i see it.
