fiogf49gjkf0d I was gifted a mono LP version of this performance, which I have listened to closely but once, with fair electricity. This time I was more impressed with the orchestra/orchestration than the piano playing, which I found to be a bit much, overall, and overall not totally rescued by the brilliant moments. Perhaps the big problem for me here is that I have such a clear favorite performance of this piece, namely Martha Argerich with the BPO under Claudio Abbado, 1994. Is it true that the Russian audience was very taken with this Van Cliburn performance, and, if so, was this perhaps because of "The Contest"? In any case, I suppose I need to listen more to discover and develop the best of this performance.
