Before we go any deeper into this, let's be clear whether "2 channels" means left and right, or tweeter and woofer. Paul seems to be talking about the former, Romy the latter....

There is an article in the current New York Times about the stratospheric prices and declining quality in high fashion:https://www.nytimes.com/2024/12/19/opinion/vuitton-chanel-burberry-lvmh-hermes.htmlIt is a funny article but the situation it descr...

It's good to see the site back. I must admit I was a bit worried, and hope everyone in the Cat House is well (even the Dog.)...

Others have noted an analogy between some of Bach's music and the art of M. C. Escher, the originator of the "tri-prong" and other visual paradoxes. It's a certain "strangeness" that they have in common.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gödel,_Escher,_Ba...

Hi Domidaw, it looks like your amplifier is working pretty much correctly. The plate current in the output tube is a little below the recommended range (180 mA versus 200-280 mA in Romy's diagram) but too low is better than too high and you can adjus...
|
Hi again Domidaw. Your latest results look inconsistent: a 38V drop across 50-ohm R22 would imply 0.76A or 760 mA flowing through R22. If C10 is not leaking any significant DC current then this 760 mA should be the current through R21 and point D. Bu...
|
Are you sure you don't mean 880mV or equivalently 0.88V ? If it is 880 mV then the output tube plate current is indeed 880 mA, which is way too high, but at least then we know C10 is definitely not the problem. What is the voltage at pin 5, the outpu...

It sounds as though C10 is OK and correctly connected. C2 is OK as well considering it is in parallel with a 30k resistor. The next thing I think, is to turn on the amplifier with both tubes in place and check the current through R21. If R21 and henc...
|
Domidaw, you are looking at the right things but there is something to consider: when you put a resistance meter across a discharged capacitor you see a low resistance initially because the battery in the meter is charging the capacitor a little, so ...
|
If C10 is connected backwards there could well be a large leakage current through it. It may also have been damaged if this is the case, requiring its replacement....
|
Domidaw, you wrote: The photo shows the capacitor c10. Its minus is connected to ground, its plus goes to the output transformer,According to the schematic it is the grounded (minus) end of C10 that should connect to one side of the output transforme...

Domidaw seems to be saying he has only one channel almost working, this one with the burning resistor. I don't think he said he has one (other) channel working correctly. If he is really dropping 240 - 196 = 44V across 50 ohms, then he has 44/50 = 0....
|
I haven't tried to build a Melquiades but I understand tube electronics decently, so I'd like to comment on this problem. The main question is why Domidaw's output tube is apparently carrying 3 to 4 times as much plate current as it should be. It is p...

There is a saying in my family "two removals (moving house) equals one fire" (no joke right now out West!). Similarly we say "two dogs equals one child" in the amount of care and feeding needed. So you went from three children to effectively 3.5; not...

Actually Romy addressed my original question a while ago, I don't know why none of us remembered:http://goodsoundclub.com/Forums/ShowPost.aspx?PageIndex=1&postID=17459#17459I will look into these. meanwhile I did have a nice listen to B4 from the...

So I bought the Bruckner symphony collection by the Bavarian Radio (Bayerische Rundfunk) Orchestra. It was the least expensive set offered by HDTracks and I thought it would be interesting to hear how different conductors approach Bruckner. It has Ma...

Romy,A short list of your "safe" Brucknerian conductors and/or orchestras would be helpful. I do want to go with a download this time for a few reasons and would prioritize audio quality a little higher than performance quality. I do not insist on th...

Bruno,Let me clarify some things. First, I am not making any negative criticism of Bob Robbins or his method. Not having heard a system set up his way, I cannot say anything definite about the results. Also, while I visited Romy twice (in Boston Back...

Romy,If you do hire Mr. Robbins then the key, I think, will be for you to observe and personally participate in his system tuning ceremony (he will in any case need another pair of hands to help move the Macondo around and especially in a way that wi...

I listened to this talk up to the beginning of the question-and-answer session. I am surprised that this method would really capture the essence of Romy's almighty DPOLS condition. It seems to me that Robbins is very much centered on imaging alone, a...

Poking around for options to acquire downloads of the Bruckner symphonies, including the performances briefly streamed free in April, I came across the following options on HDTracks.com. In no particular order we have, covering at least B4 through B9...

Hi Rakesh,I tried that link but I got "Video unavailable, this video is private."There may be a technical reason, or perhaps Ma wants it to be a once-only, real-time event.I apologize for not putting the announcement up here sooner. I knew about the ...

...and I very much enjoyed the performance too. I don't know if Yo-Yo was physically in WGBH's facility but the announcer said WGBH "produced" or something like that, so I assumed they played some role in making it all work (thought I picked up the s...

I'm listening now and the sound is quite good in my opinion. Ma is plying from WGBH's studio in Boston so I presume they are carrying the stream as well. He is on for one more hour....

Yo-yo Ma will be playing Bach solo cello suites for 2.5 hours starting in a few minutes (noon Pacific Daylight Time in North America.) He has a YouTube channel and it is also carried on the website kusc.org and maybe elsewhere. I don't know what the ...

In a way it is not so hard to explain to outsiders what we are trying to accomplish, in that often when non-initiates visit us and listen to our installations they do remark that the sound is quite good compared to any audio they heard before. What is...

My best guess is she is standing about midway on a line from the conductor to the tympani....

Best wishes for Amy's performance with BPO tomorrow. I knew she was "serious" about the viola but did not realize she played with an orchestra. Pretty good for somebody who also takes care of three little kids, two cats, one Romy and a medical caree...

And the original WAMM was itself a Fulton J Modular wanna-be, wasn't it?...
|
I think you will only be able to decide about this after listening to some operas or other video-audio through the big system. The analog output of the video player may be good enough for the purpose, or it may sound terrible through the Milqs/Macon...
