Romy Hi, I didn't particularly set out to 'demean' Avantgarde, they have a good business model, I don't believe it is a secret that they modify conventional drivers, I simply mean that the constituent parts of a Cessaro horn ...
|
Coops, I think in some ways Romy is right in that modern commercial horn designs based on reference drive units do rather price themselves out of the market.
It's long been the preserve of the dedicated enthusiast and avid tweaker who is prepared ...

Hi Romy,
thanks for the links. Did you try any other TAD's than the 4001? Like the 2002 1" device or the 4003? The ET-703? Did you utilise the 703 to cover the top octave and a half and suppress the resonance? It's certainly my experience that the...
|
Romy,
I often note that you describe TAD compression drivers as being not to your taste. Could you tell us which of their range of drive units you have direct experience of and on what horns?
With regards to value for money, no such thing exist...
|
And you listened to these for two seconds too?...
|
Having visited High End last year, and spent a little more than 2 seconds in the Cessaro room, cold and sterile is not how I would describe the resultant sound at all. Just goes to show how we all seem to hear differently....
[What I am interested if you observe with your Berning amplifiers, since they have UHF pulses on filaments and in UHF modulator instead of output transformer, the “Super Texture” effect.I would also it you do not mine would...
|
Sorry Romy - I've no idea what you are on about. Did you link to the wrong post by chance?...
|
Yes but you are still going to need a higher order slope than 6db to prevent unnecessary non linear distortion from the bass driver and then the insertion losses inherent in a PLL crossover become an issue. Higher order slopes and active operation wo...

Sounds like he needs someone to build him a decent cabinet....

If there's one thing I hate about internet forums it's people postulating about sounic characteristics and possible failing in equipment they have never heard.
FWIW Romy, David has been making waves and creating groundbreaking designs for over 30 ...

David got rid of transformer and replaced it with a DC transformer, claiming that it is “better”.
And I should point out that not only is there still a transformer in the circuit, but many other ...

I think it is a simple case of different strokes for different folks.
Drdna writes about communicating the essence of sound - I write about the essence of music. He writes about wondering what Coltrane was thinking. I write about hearing him looki...
|
Firstly are your observations regarding the ZH270 relating to comparisons with other push pull designs or SET's?
Secondly could you explain which characteristics of the recording are destroyed, and what mechanism David Berning uses to acheive this...
|
I felt I was listening to the clearest, most neutral, most transparent STEREO ever. But I never once relaxed and believed it was real I never thought "What was Coltrane thinking on that take?" or waited for the musicians to take ...
|
Sorry Paul but your post makes no sense.
Firstly one minute you were clearly unfamiliar with the circuit and amplifier in question, and now you are suddenly really au fait with it's sonic characteristics. Forgive me if that takes something of a qu...
Merlin, won't you at least put your amp in some sort of meaningful context, because it is a waste to continue this thread if you just treat it like a pissing contest. What speakers do you use? What sources, etc?&nb...

Do share the words of wisdom from the audio god you talked to this morning.
In what way is David idiotic? I would be delighted to be enlightened by this higher being.
With regards to all other SET's I have used, I have myself been unable to acc...
one. I like to think of toplogical change in terms of an organic visualization of the electricity. traditional valve-OPT: A guitar where the vibration of the string transmits through the air to the guitar which respond...

Guys,
I really don't have the time to take you through the concept. Try to do some reading on the Berning Web site. Take a look at Dr Gizmo's thoughts on the product and his opinion as to the veracity of the claims.
You are looking at a patent...
|
Must be the ZH270 you are talking about. I can understand what you mean with regards to the PP device - it is accurate and doesn't suger the pill in any way. I personally don't think amplifiers should - colouration is a short term emotional fix - a l...
|
Romy,
can I suggest you read about the amplifier in question before making comments?
The unit uses four tubes per channel - three drivers and one output tube. The unit has zero negative feedback. It is as pure as they come.
Directly heated ...

Well done that man.
The Berning Siegfried. A licenced version is I understand soon to be released by Western Electric, using their 300B....
|
I just assumed that this site, given it's position of authority on the subject and it's contempt for other forums, would have members who knew the model - seeing as it's been available for around 10 years and has been written about by many SET affici...
|
I don't have an OTL - I just don't have any transformers in the audible band that saturate, distort and roll off frequency extremes.
I have heard plenty of traditional SET's from Lamm to Wavac, AN, Kondo and many others. I know I could not live wi...
|
No. You are wrong. Harmonically, my SET is quite superb using either 300b or 811 I have unfettered access to the music in it's entirety. Transformer cores just distort the signal. Why on earth would I want one?
...
|
Merlin, Are you saying that your SET is not sensitive to load and a different plate load has no change to the harmonics of sound? Do you say that your output transformer does not straggle with inductance vs. capacitance bat...

Hi Romy,
Well firstly on those, the tweeter is not offset to one side - it appears to be time aligned directly behind the midrange horn and upper bass unit. Secondly, that's a JBL 2405....
|
Sorry Romy. Which loudspeaker are we talking about? Do you have a picture at all?
As for the Cessaro mod, it didn't sound very different to me - certainly not worth the effort. I'd be interested to know where they crossover to the ET-703. The Alph...
