My first choice would be a Sony SACD recorder with storage in SACD format. Quite expensive, but I would not use an expensive Sony playback device. Their early models (still available new on ebay) were designed to show how much better than regular CD ...

Today I was trying to make some experiments. I made some recodings to my reel-to-reel machine from LP. I did not go crazy and ran fairly poor cables just off my preamps. It was BASF 486 at 15ips ½ track. It was not bad, in fact quite good....

Romy:Very few prerecorded tapes had any noise reduction. Not a big problem. If the playback machine is good and in proper tune, you'll hear very little tape hiss.Key to reel tapes is enjoying them for what they are. Best,Paul :-)...
