Here is wonderful one hour-long trip across the sonic history of the EMI recordings. The collection contains 37 narrated musical fragments covering whole 20 century. Some of the fragments in there are absolutely unique!

It's a pity that the pieces are just fragments, I wish they were the whole performances. Some of them are just unbelieveable. I wonder how modern engineers could forget that things made simple and easy sound more like music. These mp3 convey more emotion and content than most modern recordings, even through my crappy PC system.

Where did you get that from? I'd like to find some of those recordings. I've had problems playing some of the higher BR files due to a lack of bandwith.

thanks and regards,

aj

Centenary Edition - 100 Years of Great Music

Hi!

The cuts are from a bonus disc that came with EMIs "Centenary Edition - 100 Years of Great Music", a 10 CD set issued in 1997. Each CD was dedicated to a decade long span, beginning with 1897-1907.

I bought the set when it came out, and I must say that it has both great and less great sides to it. The early discs are of course very great performancewise, but the CDs dedicated to the second half of the century aren't that exciting. Also, the cuts are just too short, basically. Having no more than an excerpt of one movement of a symphony just ain't enough (just an example, not too many of those "bleeding chunks", thankfully), apart from maybe wetting one's appetite. I guess this is what you inevitably end up with when trying to cram a whole century of recording onto 10 CDs.

The box-set is apparently out of print (according to Amazon.com) (see here).

Regards,
Anders Boman

Thanks for the info
You're right, one doesn't want more excerpts, but having the whole performance, maybe they selected the best fragments, but I believe that it's the whole work what gives the real deal.
I've checked the link, in those discs there are very interesting things. I'll have to look for the recordings including the whole works.

aj
