Radiation patterns matching with horns.

Occasionally scanning popular internet forums and looking what horn say I discover an interesting tendency. The people who fancy themselves big horns aficionado always roll out eyes and as an expression of final wisdom they express something like this: “most horn systems are not good because people ignore radiation patterns”. Then they go into the subject of radiation patterns matching between the channels. I uselessly do not read further.

OK, folks, consider me as am idiots but I absolutely refuse to recognize radiation patterns matching as a subject that has any meaningful to a performance of home horn-based installation.  Radiation patterns are after-effect, the post-factum, of many different things. It is like jet proportion gas that was already thrown far out of engine‘s exhaust. It is not in the play anymore.

Sure you would like to get the radiation pattern whatever you would like to get but you DO NOT administer the design action of your playback in accordance with radiation patterns and you DO NOT make any actions to match the radiation patterns between the channels of your multi- channel horn system.  The radiation patterns are byproduct, it is what it is, you do not make any efforts to deal with it. In home systems it is irrelevant and as soon you begin to deal with radiation patterns then you unavoidably screw up something else. I do know all ways to manage radiation patterns – all of them destroy sound. Do NOT DO anything with radiation patterns or even better do not even think about radiation patterns.  What is important to think during design and tuning playback has no relation to radiation pattern.

Sure if you would like to have your playback to service sound for 15 people at the same time then it is different story but it is NOT what we do for home playback. Also, if you play sound for 15 people then the ultimate sound quality is not your primary objective.  There is nothing wrong to have those other objectives, but if you are in the realm of best sound for your own relatively narrow listening spot, like 99.9999999% people are in high-end audio then toss out of your head the notion of radiation pattern matching between the channels.
