Since the electricity going better as temperature outside goes down I might begin to play and appreciate again some sting music. Lately, I bought 6 CDs and all of them turned out to be very interesting.
1) Herbert: Cello Concertos / 5 Pieces for Cello and Strings – an absolutely wonderful CD with Second Concerto is totally out of the world. The Lynn Harrell’s truly shining along with Marriner and his Acad. St. Martins (London 417 672-2)
2) Beethoven/Mendelssohn - Violin Concertos played by Viktoria Mullova and some strange “Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique” under button of Sir John Eliot Gardiner. I have no idea what the orchestra was, they did very well BTW, but the Viktoria Mullova is a true a fresh breathe of air in those celebrated pieces. (Philips 473 872-2)
3) Bohuslav Martinu’s Violin Concertos and Viola Concerto play but his cousins of Czech Philharmonic lead by Vaclav Neumann and with Josef Suk played both violin and viola. Here is where Czech should be proud for own heritage and this CD is a good size middle finger to anyone who would contest it. (Supraphon 11 1969-2 011)
4) Yong Kerstin Feltz plays Kodlay, Ysaye, Reger and Huguet y Tagell – this is her 1993 recording – simply stunning. It is ham eths she did not make big outside of Germany. (RAM 59307)
5) Tobias Picker’s Orchestral Works - Russian Philharmonic under Thomas Sanderling with Picker’s Piano concerto, a Symphony and Concerto for Cello played by Paul Watkins. It is a little bit too contemporary for my taste by in a good way. I bought it because the Cello concerto but then turned to enjoy the whole CD (CHAN 10039) Rgs, Romy the Cat
