About Stupid Dynamic

Yesterday a local audio guy came over and I played to him my Altec 19 in the finally cleared fireplace room. While he enjoyed his frumpy music I paid attention to how unintelligent sound was. I do not know if it was Altec 19 or the electronics that drove it but it was very brainless sound. It was very dynamic and very articulate but the dynamics and accumulation was very foolish, with no connectively to tone, to the tempo, to harmonics and to rest of music being played. The audio people LOVE that Sound. They pay millions for it as that sound “impresses” them. They love high dynamics and they have no cultural understanding of Sound to comprehend that dynamic is not self-centered goal but just one of many expressive tools in the long way to accomplish something larger and more important.

Anyhow, then I took the same jazz CD and plays it via Macondo and look how Macondo/Melquiades would manage the same dynamics. It was very interesting. Macondo had completely overridden the dynamics of the enter presentation. I did not feel that it was less dynamic but this time the dynamics was released what I call intelligently. When it was necessary it was very dynamic, what it was necessary it was very luxuriant and liquid.

I wish audio people understand the subject of dynamic management of playback. This subject never was enunciated anywhere and this is very unfortunate.

Misplaced dynamics.

I had this same experience listening to B&W 801 matrix speakers recently. These were very dynamic, more so than most speakers, and this stood out above all else. But these were not pleasant to listen to. I wanted to leave the room.

These were made with wide directivity which gave some false soundstage but was more of a problem and not good to listen to.

I agree that dynamics should only add realism, but not add a false feeling of power.

If there is one part of the spectrum that doesn't often do this well, it is the upper bass. I can understand people trying to add more dynamics trying to make this region sound more punchy. I don't know, I'll tell you if I find it...
