Old Reds problems
May not be the best moment, but I wanted to share a word of warning for other Red users: The paper cone is prone to a fatigue at the joint to the suspension. One of my drivers developed about 6-7cm long crack in that place. I tried to repair it following the Tannoy guy instructions and chemistry and while the results will be known in few days, close examination of the drivers shows that the paper slowly gives up at the joint to the black surround. I'm contemplating reapplying the original dope there (from Mainly Tannoy) but afraid it might stiffen the suspension.
Apart from that, the Dannoys + RI are giving me a lot of pleasure. I got the Tannoy ST-50 supertweeters but that was rather a miss than a hit. Despite a careful alignment with RTA,  the only thing they did was to shift the tonal balance towards HF, making it harder. I did not hear any magic, more bass attack etc some people report. Since my wife likes them, I kept them but firing to the back, with the phase reversed.

Cheers,
Jarek

Better Living Through Chemistry
Jarek, this response is mostly to send best wishes to your increased household! As for the 10" reds, it sounds like you have access to experts, to compare to your own ideas. While I do not have much experience with Tannoy Reds, per se, I have something like 100 old drivers, and many of them suffered at my hands as I de- and re-constructed them, trying to figure them out and get the best from them. One thing I learned is, pretty much any change will be audible with the "best sounding" drivers. Small tear repairs might be an exception, if done properly. I wound up using as little as possible archive quality PVA glue and lots of patience, to where repairs are barely visible and totally inaudible. As you know, the surround is a special case. Likely, we have all seen old drivers that have had "professional" surround treatments that "look original" to the driver in question. These treatments do affect the sound, but you might find the changes are acceptable to you, albeit a change in compliance might affect your overall Remedios operating parameters. As for the ST-50, I thought the stock tweeter went right on up there? Where did you cross over, and how fast? Pointing (extra) tweeters away from the listener is an old trick, but what you describe sounds like a simple case of overkill. You may remember a while back, when I recommended older 12" DMTs. Anyway, welcome to Conscious Audio (with a conscience)!
Best regards,
Paul S

Thank you!
Thank you, Paul! Don't want to jinx it, but it seems my son is enjoying music and classical in particular. As a test of speakers after the repair, today we listened together to a life broadcast from Warsaw Philharmonic of Chopin's E-minor concerto with Eric Lu (who won the Chopin competition last year). I cannot comment on the possible sound changes as I had to listen low volume plus I give the speaker some hours to loosen/settle the repair before the critical listening.
I fully agree with the crucial role of the surround, especially in Reds where reportedly it is a continuation of the cone, just thinned down and soaked in their special treatment. I'm actually quite afraid of touching it but had no choice - there was about 70mm full blown crack. I did just the minimal (which was not a bit at the end) to repair the crack but I'm wondering how bad or not would be a gentle re-applying of the original dope to the dried out/delaminated/surface cracked parts of the surround. I'm trying to get some feedback from the Tannoy group.
Yes, ST-50 sounded like too much of HF, ear piercing level (I'm listening near field, about 2m from the drivers). ST-50 has its own built in x-over 12dB/octave, with 3 settings for the sensitivity: 85, 89, 93dB and the x-over point: 14, 16, 18kHz. When firing directly, I crossed at 18kHz and tested all 3 sensitivities: it either gave nothing or was too much with nothing in between. Firing away, its set at 14kHz and 93dB but honestly I cant detect any change if its on or off (it fires into an open space - a kitchen of 8m2)

Cheers,
Jarek

"Original" Replacement Cones
Just wanted to say out loud what you probably thought about already. I suppose most high-quality "European" drivers use Kurt Meuller cones. Indeed, this company is venerable, and they are "serious". However, my own collecting has established conclusively that "the same" cones changed from time to time over the years. You would have to have focused discussions with experienced Tannoy nuts to try to get an idea of what sorts of changes you personally might be dealing with. That said, be very careful with solvants on the cone, as some paper formulations "wick" aggressively, and - sadly - some paper formulations break down from, say, acetone, and if any reaches a VC it will ruin the cone. On the flip side, it is actually far easier to replace the entire cone and VC (and spyder...) than to do "spot repairs" to the surround. You have certainly gathered that you would have to add super-sheer silk, fibrated tissue, or something to bridge cracks in the surround. In any case, I suppose you have discovered small artist brushes and palette knives for repairs.

Best regards,
Paul S
