"I could feel a leg of my beloved Patricia Barber right in my hand.”And there you have it!However, I do take issue with "So, can we, the civilized Americans, to take care about our own needs to have our audio industry to serve us in a respectable way...

Here's one suggestion, the VMPS RM/X Elixer at (I think) $22K, although for sheer value I would recommend the RM-40 at (I think) $5K. Both speakers have won Best of Show for sound at CES, for whatever that's worth.Go to http://vmpsaudio.com/&nbs...

While in general I agree with Romy about Wilsons, I have once or twice heard them sound really, really good. On the other hand I have also heard them sound really, really miserable -- worse than anything. I'm not talking merely mediocre her...

"Could it be that relieved of the burden of choice such as offered by a large record collection, that some minor neurotic anxiety disappears, making it easier to enjoy the music?" Interesting speculation...Do you feel more comfortable in a ...

"I always find it useful to ask if they are happy with the sound they're getting." That's an intelligent approach, to which must be added one's assessment of whether they're likely to speak candidly.clark...

"I was looking for higher purpose of audio." Yes, and that would be music. But audio, as you seem to be saying, can be enjoyed on its own as a hobby, a hobby I might add much superior to coin collecting, for instance. All I meant by my quoted sta...

Hey Romy, I've been operating that way for twenty-five years. The trick is always to find an individual's music appreciation level first, then hit the audio.clark...

"I wonder if is it only in US." 'Fraid not. In fact, by all reports, it's worse in Europe, where the blatant sexualization of *everything* precedes the American experience, often by a decade or two. Just look at many of their magazines...

Many of those are excellent and rate highly on my list of individual performances. Note that I had been talking about sets.As for quartets, there are many fine performances as well by the Pascals, the Bartoks and the Beethovens.clark...

The Barenboim's not so hot, while the Brendel is a decent starter set -- he gives you the right notes to learn. But there are many better.

One sees this question often posed, and I think rightly so. I've been introduced to some fine music and performance by my friends and associates. In fact, they're better than reviewers!
So I was dismayed when I started off a post with...

[This is a repost from Audio Asylum -- Music Lane]
Not to mince words, I have five. And this from a guy who usually disdains such collections. But there are exceptions.

"Thinking about that later, it occured to me that a good stereo should be able to relay that feeling."Yes indeed. Only, it won't -- because stereos generally play studio recordings, and the spirit does not visit musicians in the studio. That"feeling" ...

As it happens, I tuned in on the second half of the Eighth and couldn't recognize the music for a while, it was so astonishingly well- and differently- played. I've asked around and no one I know recorded it. Pity.As always, for t...

What's being missed here is this: The parameters of location are fixed by the recording engineer/producer.Your typical Telarc has such a distant sound, one's only choice is the "you are there" reproduction.Your typical traditional piano recording is ...

Beautiful note, thanks Romy. It opened a whole new world of appreciation. As to the recorded performances, I'm ashamed to say I've never heard any of those you mentioned. However, there are two *yet again* I return to every few years: Arthur Fiedler...

That Italian set was notable too for having been pressed with vacuum-tube technology, nor did it exhibit the usual DGG over-miking and mixing. In short, the good sound reinforced the good performances.
Any comments on the earlier mono Mravinsky set?...
