Post Subject: Lynn Harrell plays Herbert Cello concertos.Posted by Romy the Cat on: 11/13/2007
Since the WHRB broadcasted Victor Herbert First Cello Concerto by Lynn Harrell I got hooked on Herbert. I generally am not big fun of British composers but I do love a lot what Herbert did. It is in a way “light” and not intellectually demanding. Compare to other concertos it sounds more like “salon” concerto but it is still very beautiful….
Among the CDs that I got recently there is one absolutely stunning:
London London 417 672: Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, Neville Marriner, conductor. Lynn Harrell, Cello
Victor Herbert:
Cello Concerto No. 1 in D Major, Op. 8
Cello Concerto No. 2 in E minor, Op. 30
Five Pieces for Cello and Strings
If you never heard the Herbert’s Cello Concerto you might try getting them. I have a few versions by Yo-Yo Ma, Georges Miquelle and James Kreger but the recent discovery of Lynn Harrell and Marriner sound very “mutually” – beautiful music and the truly beautiful play….
