Post Subject: "Overkill"?Posted by Paul S on: 10/12/2025
If I was (nominally) surprised to think my amps were running under 30W playing Music via The Loudspeakers, imagine how baffled I am to learn (by actually reading the manual...) that the "halfway point" (-20 dB) on the meter is 3W at 8 Ohms (6W at 4 Ohms).(!) Does this mean the MA9-S2s are "overkill" for The Loudspeakers? I have to say, they are acceptable to me in terms of Musical Sound the way I use them, and they have also "worked" with my BassZillas, Mark's Soundlab A-1s, and all the "stacks" of vintage drivers and their X/Os I used them with. By "comparison" these amps got at least as much from Mark's very-inefficient A-1's as his own Wotan amps (1,200 WPC). What does it all mean? I'm thinking it means, don't base decisions on specs. The more listening before a change, the better. Then go to work to optimize the system in a given room, end to end.
