Everyone (Reviewer) has his own kind of way to stay in this business. Most buy their stuff at reviewers price from manufacturer, some start with their own gear and think about upgrades and how it can be done ( is a "recommendation " review better for my price than "it's bullshit, but I like it and buy it.."), some get loaners from manufacturers, some are corrupt, some want support for their private websites, some pay the ads with hardware....anyway.... even when HP writes about loosing the soul of music, when you see his systems you will ask yourself automatically: Did he buy that stuff???
I don't think so. HP's music taste is good, no doubt, but also his flavor for super expensive components.

When I strip all that down, we come to the Emperor with his new clothes.... there is no real independence. So, at the end of the day: forget it.

This is very true but actually HP is in an even worse position than you are suggesting. Before he had quite a bit of leverage as Editor of TAS. Now as the Editor of a tiny webblog he has been reduced to writing the most obsequious ads disguised as personal comments for anyone willing to loan him equipment. His underling has to pipe in as well. See the blurbs on Reite Audio and the turntables. The only way for this to work is as a sideline for somone who is financially comfortable or has a good paying day job. I don't think HP is quite in that category (given his ultra expensive tastes as Stitch notes). Also I suspect the new TAS has sent out the word that cooperating with HPSoundings will be a negative. Certainly no one has deserted TAS to join with him. I think we've reached the point where the only place to get straightforward information about audio now is with the amateur enthusiast webblogs.
