The VPO is my favourite orchestra, followed by the Royal Concertgebouw
Orchestra. Both have glorious strings. The VPO's strings section has a
very light and aetheral but rich string tone. It almost floats above
the orchestra. This is a very recognizable signature and is very
Viennese to me. The cymbals sound very sophisticated, the golden toned
brass section very dynamic and powerful. It is in comparison with the
Gewandhaus Orchester Leipzig not old gold, but new shiny polished gold.
The Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra has also very sophisticated
quality, with chocolate dark and seductive sounding wood winds. Very
palpable to, almost organic sounding. When the CGO is playing in the
Concertgebouw, I have often associations with paintings of the great
Rembrandt van Rijn. Those paintings are famous for their light and
shadow effects.
