I have a guy visited me today who have high-voltage version of RCA 1428. I asked him to provide is feedback what in his view difference sonic between his 1428 and my S2 driver. Of course it might be large difference in the way how we use our drivers. For instants the only one time I hear it was in the home of an unspeakable idiot Jonathan Weiss who with his barbarian hands and brains vandalizes whatever he touches. I have no reasons to suspect that my today visitor misuse his 1428 driver. He has multi-amped multi-way horns with his own amps. I do not know how his installation sounds (he is not from US) but his subjective feedback I find interesting and turn out to be exactly what I expected.

He feels that 1428 smoother sounding driver with more mellow and more placid response to dynamic, contrast and to colors. S2 is slightly more responsive to contrast, more aggressive, more transient and more granular.  It pretty much correlates with what I heard and that brings a question: why the people who use 1428 drive this driver with more idle amps? Does this expressive sluggishness is the part of the “phenolic sound” that I do not like in many vintage drivers of it is inability of the drivers user to make the drivers to give the sound that they have in their minds?

I do not feel that S2 is better driver then 1428 or vise versa, I just expose what my visitors said today and typing is while he is listening my Bruckner….
