If you have a flat ceiling you can put this LeCleach Idea attached to the ceiling.
You will place some sound absorbers and/or difussers on the rest of the ceiling anyway: with that you will "loose" the step visually.
The sound will be the same, you will have a flat floor. The ceiling will need to be high though, but if you are building from scratch...
