I have been thinking for a day about it. Welser-Möst, that I generally like, lead Cleveland a year ago with B8. I would not talk about the rest, but the Adagio made me wonder. The super slow tempo others might consider disgusting is right in my alley and if it is 20x slower it would be fine by me.  Still, the way how Cleveland sound and how Welser-Möst end the phrases before the long poses make me to feel that it is not an anticipation of something next but rather a Cosmic Void. At some performances somebody like Celibidache makes the Voids even longer but they are somehow filled with anticipation and the memory of what was before. With this Welser-Möst version for some reasons the Voids are true Voids, and they are not connected with what was before and after. I just wonder what might be responsible for it is possible to “fix” it with audio methods.

Romy, this is only heard by me on YouTube, but you have pointed out before how uncommon it is for an orchestra to "project a message" softly. Musicians know about this, and it sounds on the computer like the slowly and softly played strings here do not contain the "latent energy" to "fill the void" that you observe. I am thinking that 3rd way efforts are more about finding what's there than adding what is not there to begin with. Cleveland has had its moments, for sure. But nobody I know of is 100%, no matter the price of admission. This is why I love having 100 years of Great Music on hand!

If you find a way to "fix" this, please share!

Best regards,
Paul S
