A few weeks back I bought a CD of Hans Vonk lead Saint Louis Symphony with Bruckner 4. It was not the best Bruckner 4 that I heard – the Saint Louis is not the orchestra that does the best Bruckner but it was a very nice performance, surprisingly brilliantly recorded. In the end, being as compulsive moron as I am, I ended up buying the whole collection.

All Hans Vonk’s recording from this collection are live and frankly they are the best recordings of Saint Louis Symphony that I heard. I want more….

fiogf49gjkf0d Hans Vonk is also my favorite... It was Slatkin that built up the St Louis Symphony orchestra,,and passed the batton on to Vonk when he left,, VONK and the STL.,,,did a special concert for PBS TV of Carmina Burana,,,The chorus and soloists really had fun with that, and amused the audiance,,I have the video somewhere in my library,,, Powel Hall is a great site for recording,,The soud balance is perfect,,,I remember one time sitting up in the balcony all the way back against the wall,,and still the orchestra was very clean and balanced,,,A great and lavish hall, Amazing place..William Hoekstra was recording enginer at that time,, I liked his recording style useing B&K, Bruel & kjar mics,,When he passed on ,,,Chris Rock did the engineering for RCA,,,I didnt like his balance,,, I dont know who is doing recording eng. for Pentatone.. The sound on those CD is very good, in fact I was surprised. The St Louis Symphony not always shines, they play sometime like a boxer who has his womb trembling to hit a person in a face. Hey, it is still better then our BSO that remind me a boxer who think that he hit a face but in reality he hits a womb….
BTW, if you are a fan of Carmina Burana then that St Louis Symphony have now David Robertson who is very interesting fruit. The 3-4 years back David Robertson lead SF with Carmina Burana with the best result I ever heard from this work. I have of air recording, if you wish I might share it.
Anyhow, those Vonk recording come under own St Louis Symphony label. I was looking more, hoping to find the St Louis recordings with Slatkin and Robinson but I did not find any…

When Slatkin was music director and conductor,,The St Louis Symphony was voted No#1,, i dont know how that standing came about..Some politicle shananigons i presume.. Most of the Slatkin recordings were produced for RCA at that time... i have half a dozen recordindg of Carmina Burana,,,As well as one i did of Slatkin and St Louis Symphony at the summer river festival,,,I think i mentioned here on your forum,,Where the soloist choked on one note and nothing came out..Probably a bug flew down her throat,,Slatkin was amused,,and grinned back at her,, Yes some times the STL play like a boxer,,and they at times do slug it out..like pusseys. I think the Vonk recordings were probably done by Berry Hufker He is music director for Webster University,,St Louis..I havent seen him for quite some time,,I,ll have to look him up when i get back to STL.
