Good to see that one of them has enough of an interest in music to gather these items together.

But which one?  Whose system is it?

It should be Putin’s system.  Medvedev is using the Vitus Master phonostage and the Tidal speakers according to my sources.

Yes, Guy, thanks. The images are making waves for day among Russian audio sites. Unfortunately in Russia expensive playback is a part of “successful mad room décor” and prominent Russian love to pose wearing ridiculously expensive watches, behind the wheel of super- exotic cars or fingering an absurdly long-legged woman. I find it a bit chip and generally we in US went over it years back. The New England rich people do not have a need to show off. So, I am afraid that hi-fi decor that Kremlin press decided to use is no more than just a background décor, sort of still-life space holders. Why in fact I am afraid? I do not afraid, I do not care…

What however I feel is shameful in the images above, besides bad taste, is that fact that a president of a country and prime-minister of a county did not find own country audio to make the pictures. Presidents do not plug commercial products. When somebody from White House interviewed then they  cover the Apple or IBM logos on computers and brands of microphones and cameras – WHt is not aplace for products placement.   This is understandable and everyone works along with it. Even if a President does decide to use his office for commercial advertising then use products of your fucking country. I can’t imagine that Clinton, Bush or Obama would make picture from WH’ resentence while they are hugging a China-made turntable or a German vacuum-cleaner. I think the images above are a slip or this public relation office. If he wanted to demonstrate himself as an audio person the n it had to be products of his country.

At least we now know Mark Levinson's current target market.

I'd agree with that. I wouldn't mind seeing the British PM being seen to support the manufacturers here (such as Avid & Naim!) in such a public way. However, such conspicuous consumption wouldn't be well received here in these straightened times and also I suspect that if he has any music interest at all, an iPod will be adequate as it is for millions of others.

Forgive my ignorance.  Are there currently manufacturers of 'high end' turntables, cd players, amplifiers & speakers in Russia?
I'm sure there are but what brands are they?

Markus. Hasn't that always been ML's target market?

Guy, I do not know what Mark Levinson target market is. I heard that after a few years of hiding in South America from US creditors he re-immerge somewhere in Europe and planning to start a new audio company. I am sure in realist it will be another venture what he grab investor’s money, loose it and run away but I anyhow wish him good luck.

My comment about the Russian president has nothing to do with Russian patriotism. I am far from it, hey the Dr. Strangelove is one of my favorite movies – how bad shell it be? Still, I feel that those Russian pictures were inappropriate, inappropriate for any president not only for Russian president.  I have no idea if any currently manufacturers of 'high end' turntables, cd players, amplifiers & speakers in Russia”. I am sure that they do exists and I am sure that if their brands would show up on those pictures then everyone would know them. This is the whole point. You need to understand that the way how those pictures are taken is not a live journalism. They had a staff of stylist, male up artists, public relation specialists who plan and orchestrated each minute detail on the image that will go public. 10-12 year back I shot a wedding for a guy who was a member of Hilary Clinton’s secret service, at the time when Bill Clinton was a President.  I did ask him a lot about photographic procedures about the president and first family. He assured me that there is no single official accidental image and everything is going over a chain of modeling, authorization and strategic message sending. I am sure Russian have the very same and this is why I feel that to make images of Russian President publicizing foreign equipment was stupid thing to do.

It would not be the same if US President say publicly that he like to ride Mongolian Horse or like to read Sound Americas literature. This is fine to me. However, I will have problem if the same US President would publicly accent the fact the he bought to his daughter a non-American car and then explicitly use the car as a photographic prop…

Russia is interesting for every manufacturer to sell super expensive units. They can start promotion from scratch and the chance they get more reputation here than in other countries is quite good. And, aren't we all fixed on products which are moved into focus from our importers?

This does not actually belong to anybody. This is like a Gov't or corporate residence and the 'hi-fi' is a part of decoration. Decent system apart from Mark Levinson's new clothes stuff. I presume the Daniel Hertz or whatever is a present from Petrof piano who represent or tried to represent them in Russia.
