It can take me months to pan randomly through a given issue of Stereophile, but Fremer's review of the SS Vitus MO-P201 phonostage caught my attention this month.

Mike actually clearly states that this 2-box item is better than the Boulder 2008.  Well, for the price, it ought to; but at least you get what you pay for, right?

Subtle-ish suggestions pepper the review that the unit may want for some (continuity?) something that, according to Mike, can only be gotten from tubes (again, the Vitus is SS).

Never having heard this unit, still I wonder, who would spend a significant amount on any phonostage that did not offer a coherent, easily-repeatable variety of playback curves? Not I.

Paul,

I do not know anything about Vitus phonostages but it is what it is. Manufactures each few months manufacture new products and it is given to media publicists to sell it. It is what they do for leaving – to inform public that new product is available. What they say in trims of their judgment is irrelevant in some case they did not even used the products.  I know a big name reviewer who reviewed very expensive tube amps and gave excellent review but according to the amp manufacture the amp were made defective and were not operational in the reviewer house. I know a reviewer who reviewed/listen speakers over a phone …from UK. I know another famous reviewer who was revered a phonostage but he did not have a TT for years and years.  This is all a circus made for Morons to subscribe. It is not to mention that if you actually sit with Framer and like and look at the sound they are accustom to then you will learn that this fish swims in very shallow water.

Zako, you might be misinformed, please read my Framer/Continuums saga not as my fantasy but as chronicle.

It is irrelevant if Continuem turntable was a loser product or not. What is relevant is that when Continuums was given to Framer then it was targeted to be $25K-$30K. It was purely Framer action to jack the price to $115K – the pack of the hi-fi leaches need to be nourished. The Morions subscribe Stereophile, read the idiotic articles but they do not understand that if tomorrows some kind of smart epidemic illness exterminate all reviewers, editors, marketing pimps, distributors and the rest audio plague   then not only priced would dive 4 time lower  but the manufacturer would be able do MUCH more interesting products.

I do not know what Vitus phonostages are but a few years ago I made a rule – any product that that Mr. Framer took under his wing is garbage that need to be discarded. It they were a serious company and they had serious product then they would not go so low as to let Framer to review their products. If Vitus needs the Framer’s help to be sold then… it does need help and they have something to hide…..

Hm, I am not sure that I agree with it. The multi-curved phonostages, with really few exceptions are by nature compromises. I would not mind if a reference phonostages would be a single- curve. With all my appreciation of multi-curved phonostages I feel that multi-curving is a pain in ass and I do not doing it. Multi-curving makes since for the people who convert LPs to digital but for routines listening LP practice – I do not miss multi-curving. In fact my reference phonostages has no even impedance adjustment. In my phonostage, as in a good resonant - all efforts are in cooking, not in serving…

I do not get Stereophile and I do not know anything about Vitus MO-P201 phonostage . It might be a good device but knowing that Vitus selected idiot-Framer to promote their products really turns me off from this company.

Yes, first things first; playback should not be compromised for "features" (and I am the classic hair shirt guy). Here, I'm thinking that there's no need to spend this sort of money on a phonostage to get one that's good enough, and once we are spending more, why not add some useful features? It's not so much that I "miss" multiple curves, and I am not at all interested in converting records to digital (???), rather I happen to own plenty of records that would benefit from this treatment, just in terms of raising the quality of the playback as I listened. Just because one or two companies that offer multiple curves do not make it simple does not mean it needs to be difficult. This, IMO, is where extra money should go.

I can't stand to re-read the "review" right now to be sure, but do I remember that the thing does not even have a mono switch?  Maybe Patricia Barber only comes in stereo...

Best regards,
Paul S

I did not saw fremer review about vitus phonostage , It seems vitus have no relation with stereophile magazine and i think another magazine wrote about vitus phonostage.

Vitus is a good company between market companies, i listened to their amplification and are the most linear between ss designs. very very good micro dynamic and velvet texture. It's the only ss design that sound correct and emotional to me.
they make 25w/50w/100w class A no feedback push pull amplifier. they never produced over 100w and their amplifier sound is quite different from other solidstate designs.

I think we could not say all products under fremer review are crap or they have a problem that wants to hide.

market logic is simple:
use stereophile or fremer for increasing sale and stereophile is just a tool for company business.

vitus make product for money but his designer knows how to make an amplifier.
