I see a lot of problems in his specific implementation but the idea of extra long arms always fascinated me. In the past I has Micro Seki 16’ arm – the longest arm I ever seen. But those Portuguese guys went further… This photograph was sent to me by a visitor of the site and I have no additional information about this arm. Do anyone did try anything like this?

The arm pictured above may be made by Rossner & Sohn (as is the turntable) but is definitely a good deal longer than 12".  One wonders when the benefits of better geometry become outweighed by the reduction in stiffness/structural integrity or indeed whether that is as significant as people once thought.

Another long arm here based on the Altman design but taken to extreme lengths.

I do not know what Horo music means on the language where those guys are from but in English it makes a lot of fun: HororMuse of HomoMusic… :-)

Anyhow, a visitor sent me a link today to a company that do new TT.

Horo_Turnable.jpg

I can’t read what they say, so I know nothing about it. The TT looks like “sexy” but I have a concern.  The super long tonearm is good but with THAT long arm (that I might estimate is 16”-20”) in order o keep the effective mass the arm wand has to be VERY light, I lean really-really. I am sure they did it very light… BUT…

With such a light wand and with such a high surface of the wand the tonearm shall be very much exposed to vibration through air from room pressurizing by loudspeakers. The sexy looking cartridge cable that is hanging below like a violin bow does not help as well as it only increases the surface of the tonearm’s sail and the unwonted thrust from air disturbance… Probably this TT shall come with some kind of sarcophaguses that would isolate it from room’s air.

I also do not know what is the purpose of TWO THREADS to drive the platter. Sure it looks very nice….

Here's an even more extraordinarily long 30" arm from Horo.

(images and info from 6moons website)

It appears to be shaped like a violin bow.The piano-like plinth is a bit kitsch, though, and those legs look very flimsy...

The arm pictured above is 26" long IIRC. It was made as a joke, as in who's got the longest. It is not a commercial product. I guess the bending modes would be interesting.

I believe the Horo turntable is more about aesthetics than about sound.
