I speak with people, receiving emails, read others comments here and there and I constantly surprised how the accidentally obtained and unreasonably interpreted data become a wide spared audiophile myths.

For instance there is a strong believe, with which I fight for quite long time, that 6C33C should not be used with fixed bias as it has a “reported instability”. First of all the 6C33C should not be use with any other bias besides the fixed bias because of the PURELY SONIC REASONS. As far as the thermo instability of the plate: well, ….the 6C33C has a secretly build-in testing devise.

This testing devise is testing a generally compatibility of loudspeaker with amplifier and ….the audio-intelligence of a system user. The anode of a not-dead 6C33C goes hot if you overdrive the tube with plate current or with input voltage. Why would you overdrive the tube with a strong input voltage? Because you have insultingly low sensitive speakers! Well, in my language a person who use a low sensitively speaker with SE amplifier should be called a Moron and therefore the built-in 6C33C’s Moronometr begin to alarm the user making the 6C33C’s anodes do red informing the used: “You, retarded, do not use me!!! Get rid of those foolish speakers or buy a SS PP amplifier”

So, the moral of this story is following. The SET amps, contrary to the foolish FRAUDULENT fashion crated by the Audio Industry, do not sound well with sub 100-1003dB speakers (in average rooms) and with sub 12R load. Ironically, but the industry does not offer any properly sounding over 100dB speakers….

So, the guys without having the suitable speakers drive the 6C33C with zillion volts from input trying to get some power out of it but the 6C33C’s Moronometr kikes them out. As the result - the boys dgo for the cathode or automated bias and convert the 6C33C’s sound into a smell of a wet dog….

I've never tried anything but self bias. Do you think fixed bias is better in every case, or does it depend on the output tube?

Paul,

I do not have any reasons to say anything about bias regarding any other tubes beside the 6C33C.

The point that I was trying to make the most of the people out there do not have a proper load for this CE amplifiers. They feel that when thier SETs sound loud enough in thier listing rooms then it is sufficient enough. In fact nothing could be further from the “truth”. SETs with dull speakers have no transients, no speed and no “juice” sound – it is how 90% of all SETs sound out there. As soon we begin to drive SETs harder to punch our dead acoustics then SET stopped to be SET sound-vise and become to be a “wishful thinking based upon a single-ended topology”. What I was saying that the beauty of the 6C33C is that when this tube gets a barbarian drive the anode go in thermo instability…. and this is perfectly fine because the tube do not sound well with this particular load anyhow. If a person have no ears then by looking at the anode of the 6C33C the person can use his vision to realize the his dead speakers should be more suitable for Krell or Mark Levisohn amplifiers but not 6C33C-based SET. My very approximant and base-on-nothing estimate suggested that with 6C33C, using both plates, it is nice take out of it no more then ~ 3-4W. All the rest should be gained by the sensitively of the speakers.

So, the boys who take from thier amps full 15-18W and complain about the 6C33C’s instability should change loudspeakers of move to smaller rooms. Both of the solutions are beneficial from VERY multiple perspectives.

I can relate to your point about mating SETs with inefficient speakers. I guess since they don't sound overtly bad when they clip, some people feel they can be run with less dynamic headroom than SS amps require. The resulting compression probably sounds fine for some pop music styles...

It is convenient that the 6c33c has a built in warning light.

As for the bias on my amp, I will leave it alone unless I find a reason to change it.
